A transformational partnership is improving breastfeeding outcomes

A successful pilot scheme saw HCRG Care Group prescribe the Anya pregnancy, baby and breastfeeding app to new mothers in Lancashire and the impact has been overwhelmingly positive.

Our Lancashire Healthy Young People and Families Service is run on behalf of Lancashire County Council and provides information and support to children and young people aged 0-19 and their families. An integrated public health nursing service commissioned to deliver the Healthy Child Programme, this includes specialist infant feeding provision, breastfeeding peer support and specialist perinatal mental health support.

We worked with Anya to provide additional, free support and antenatal engagement to help families access care and improve breastfeeding continuation rates.

This collaborative approach met Baby Friendly Initiative standards and helped our health professionals to support mothers with feeding and parents build a close and loving relationship with their baby.

Just a 10% increase in breastfeeding initiation could lead to a UK-wide health cost saving of £6.3m.

Lancashire has a higher rate of babies’ first feed being breast milk compared to the national average.

About our Lancashire Healthy Young People and Families Services

In Lancashire, we run Lancashire Healthy Young People and Families Service on behalf of Lancashire County Council, providing health visiting and school nursing services across the county footprint, which has a population of 1.5 million. The service was commissioned in 2019 to provide holistic, evidence-based care and support for children, young people and their families and to ultimately improve health and wellbeing outcomes.

The MECSH programme draws together the best available evidence on the importance of the early years, children’s health and development, the types of support parents need, parent-infant interaction and holistic, ecological approaches to supporting families to establish the foundations of a positive life trajectory for their children.
