Transforming our walk-in centre to provide care for Covid-19 patients

As Covid-19 swept across the country, the Royal Berkshire Hospital faced an unprecedented situation. Within days, the Primary Care network in the area stepped in to triage suspected Covid-19 patients.

We quickly turned one of our walk-in centres into a Covid walk-in Hot Hub to ease the strain on the NHS showing a proactive approach to help the local community.

Launched a ‘Covid Hot Hub’ within nine days in one of our buildings with a full team of clinicians, managers and administration colleagues

More than 90% of the 960 patients we had seen by mid-July 2020 were either being monitored at home or sent home having been designated as at low risk.

Without this innovative service more than 800 patients would have been admitted to hospital unnecessarily during the peak of the pandemic.

The team were the first in the UK to start to use the ultrasound technique which was adopted from Northern Italy to help check patient's lungs and looking out for symptoms of Covid and ensure patients received the right care

About our Primary and Urgent Care Services

We are the second largest provider of urgent care centres (UCCs), with a long history of delivering unplanned care services including nurse-led Minor Injury Units and Out of Hours GP practices.

Many have also chosen us to take on struggling services, either in areas where there are not enough doctors to meet the needs of a growing population, or where GP partners have retired and commissioners need a long-term partner who can continue to support the local population.

Having provided primary care services since 2009, we now run 21 primary care services across the country, caring for more than 600,000 people every year.
